i think it’s funny how men use myths of female inadequacy to cover for their own shortcomings.
like how women are supposed to be horrible drivers, when four out of five serious or fatal crashes in new york are caused by male drivers and research shows that young men (18-24) have a tendency to take high risks, over-evaluate their driving skill and disrespect the rules.
or how “women are stupid”, especially with regards to the debate of the wage gap, where men often claim that women earn less because they are less capable, when there are more women studying in higher educations, women are less likely to drop out of higher educations and are more likely to end up with a better degree than men.
or how men claim that women talk too much, when research shows that men talk 65% of the time within the family and are more likely to talk in long monologues, whereas women more often offer commentary. Men also are more likely to interrupt.
or literally uncountable other scenarios. the truth is, male pride today is so inflated and builds on so many lies that it would be laughable - hadn’t it been for the fact that these things affect women’s lives every day. these jokes mean that white women earn 78 cents to a white man’s dollar. they mean that women can be ridiculed even for the things they haven’t done. they mean that women, as a gender, are assigned less worth even in the fields where they succeed. they mean that women, as a gender, are devalued and disrespected in every aspect of their professional and private lives.
ok so i’ve been keeping track of the add-ons and the tags, and it’s given me an opportunity to think about some things i’d like to address.
first of all, this post doesn’t address the additional stereotypes and jokes faced by trans women and woc. there’s an ocean of jokes made every day that hit only less privileged groups of women, and that needs to be addressed. but as a cis white woman, i’m not sure if that’s my place.
second, i didn’t make this post to imply that men are inherently less intelligent or sensible than women. there’s science to support the idea that men and women only differ because of gender stereotypes. so men are victims, too, of their own supremacy. men are taught to be reckless, to be ‘cool’ and drive fast and not think twice, so of course they are in more accidents, while women are taught that they can’t drive, so of course they are more careful to prove the joke wrong. men are taught to joke, to play football, that nerdy equals no sex, and that sex is what they should strive for, that it’s ‘natural’ and school isn’t built for them anyway, so of course they don’t graduate as often, while women are taught that they’re stupid bimbos, so of course they try harder to prove the joke wrong. and men are taught that they are important, that their words carry more meaning, that they are allowed to take up space, so of course they speak more and interrupt more, while women are taught that they speak too much, so of course they keep silent to prove the joke wrong.
third, the argument that women make less money because they “aim for jobs that pay less” is completely and utterly void. not just because women are paid less than men in the same position, not just because women are paid less than men with the same level of education, but because the truth is that, yes, women aim for jobs that traditionally pay less. but this doesn’t mean that “oh, the pay gap is a myth!!!” - in fact, it only makes the pay gap even more frightening, because it means three things:
- women are, due to gender stereotyping, more likely to seek lesser paying jobs, whereas men are more likely to seek the opposite. this is due to an ingrained, patriarchal expectation that the man is “the man in the house”, and that he’ll pay the bills. this is, in fact, hurtful to men, as they are pressured into taking jobs they might not want to fulfill a gender stereotype.
- women’s work is undervalued. traditional female sectors of work are paid less because the majority of jobs are occupied by women, and women’s labour is seen as worth less than men’s.
- women aren’t allowed into high-paying, high-power jobs. jobs in STEM, fx, are occupied mainly by men because women are scared away from sciences at an early age because of gender stereotyping (”men are better at sciences”). later on, recruiters are more likely to pick people who are culturally similar to themselves - and with the overwhelming gender disparity, this becomes a problem. this is also why the power elite is homogenous (white, cis, straight, male).
now i’ll shut up again (for a while at least)
