black moms, please stop slandering your daughters while they are transitioning into caring for their natural hair.

blackxradiance:

Man, I can’t tell you how many times my mom has made fun of me because of my natural hair. When I was younger, she took care of my hair and now as I’m getting older I want to take care of it by myself. Because of this, I’ve found that my mom has become angry at me. This has led to her making fun of me whenever I do my own twistouts, calling my hair atrocious, etc. I just began taking care of my hair by myself, and I have to admit that I’m not the best at dealing with my natural hair. I’ve done some things wrong, but it’s all about trial and error. She doesn’t even applaud me for trying. Today, I washed my hair, finger detangled it, and it came out in this little afro. I was really loving my hair. I was so confident and then my mom came in my room and said, “You’re just gonna leave your hair like that?” I said, “I like my hair”. She replies, “You would. You would… you make me sick”. Now, let me just say that my mom is not against natural hair. She’s just angry at me because I want to do it by myself. She doesn’t acknowledge the fact that it took me a long ass time to love my kinky hair, and today I was really feeling myself until she came in my room and spat her harsh words at me. Sure, she may not like the way I styled it, the products I used, or the way I washed it, but the least she could say was, “You look beautiful”.  Now, I’m feeling more down than ever. I was so fucking happy at my hair, and her negative words made me not like it. Long story short, a lot of black moms get angry at their daughters when they don’t want them to touch their hair again. It’s not that we don’t appreciate you, but we do like to touch our own hair, and learn how to deal with it ourselves. It has nothing to do with us not appreciating you. It’s more to do with us accepting ourselves and  wanting to learn how to care for our own crowns.
